Spring Renewal: Embracing Wellness in Home Health & Hospice Care

As winter fades and spring emerges, Nayar Health Care embraces the season’s spirit of renewal with four tips, offering hope and healing to our patients receiving home health or hospice care.

  1. Nature’s Healing Power:
Spring’s embrace brings healing through nature. Find solace in gardens, parks, and fresh air, fostering strength and courage amidst adversity.
  2. Spring Cleaning for Health:
Focusing on spring cleaning means you have a safe, organized space for yourself and loved ones. Practical decluttering and organization can also help our nurses and therapists arrange homes for healing.
  3. Wellness Through Nutrition:
With seasonal produce, it’s the perfect time to work towards health through nutrition. Personalized meal plans prioritize health, vitality, and enjoyment.
  4. Celebrating Joyful Moments:
Amid life’s challenges, it’s important to celebrate the moments of joy along the way! Cherish the big and small milestones that mark your journeys toward healing and wholeness. Whether it’s a birthday celebration, a graduation ceremony, or simply a shared laugh over a cup of tea, these moments of connection remind us how resilient we are.

As spring unfolds, embrace renewal. Nayar Health Care remains committed to compassionate care and nurturing wellness in every season of life.

Recognizing when it may be appropriate to consider Hospice Care for a loved one can be a challenging and emotional process.

These six signs serve as gentle reminders to consider hospice care, a specialized support that prioritizes comfort, dignity, and quality of life during a challenging time.

1) Recurrent Health Challenges: Frequent illnesses may indicate underlying health struggles.

2) Deteriorating Health Despite Treatment: Rapid health decline, despite interventions, may warrant a reassessment of the current approach.

3) Frequent Hospitalizations or Emergency Room Visits: Repeated hospital visits may suggest the inadequacy of the current care plan.

4) Unmanaged Symptoms: Uncontrolled pain, nausea, or vomiting requires exploration of options focused on comfort and relief. 5) Increased Sleeping Time: Excessive sleeping may signal fatigue, prompting a consideration of a change in care. 6) Loss of Control Over Bodily Functions: Changes in urinary or bowel control necessitate a compassionate approach to care.

For our team, Home Health Care is more than just a profession; it’s a calling to provide dedicated care.

“Anytime I have a patient who needs care or have questions they (Nayar Health Care) are 100% responsive and make sure the needs are met. Every family that I have referred to Nayar for care they have always been happy with the care received. I 1000% recommend this company.” — Erin Jones, Agency Manager Americare Plus

    Q3 2023 Newsletter

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men. In 2023, the American Cancer Society estimates there will be about 288,300 new cases and about 34,700 deaths from prostate cancer. The American Urological Association suggests men ages 50 to 69, with an average risk for prostate cancer, talk to their doctor about whether prostate cancer testing is right for them. For men with a higher risk of getting prostate cancer, which includes African-American men or men with a family history of cancer, think about talking to your doctor as early as 40-54 years of age.

    Hospice Myth Busters

Myth: Hospice Care Ends with the Patient’s Passing Fact: Families and caregivers can find comfort that Hospice Care does not end with the patient’s passing. Bereavement and grief support services are often included for family members up to a full year after the patient’s passing. Many Hospice services also help make funeral arrangements or support other issues that arise after the patient’s death.

    FLORIDA’S DELICIOUS Summer Kale Salad

In honor of our new location in Florida, we bring you a dish popular with the locals. Eating light, healthy foods help to keep our energy flowing so we can get out and enjoy all the benefits of the Sunshine State.

      INGREDIENTS

      • 2 bunches of kale

      • 1 cup of croutons

      • 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts

      • 1/3 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese

      • 1/2 cup shaved Parmesan cheese (thin shavings)

      • 3-4 lemons

      • 3 cups of cherry tomatoes

      • 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

      • 1 teaspoon salt

      • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

      INSTRUCTIONS

Rinse/dry kale. Cut off tough, middle stems. Stack leaves, a few at a time, cut ¼ inch strips across the leaves. Place in a large bowl.

Use a juicer or hand press to juice the lemons.

Combine/whisk lemon juice and olive oil, add salt and pepper. Pour over kale and mix.

Place in refrigerator and let kale sit in mixture for at least 1 hour, stirring/frequently mixing to allow juice to soften kale.

Using a cheese grater, grate 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, set aside.

Using a cheese shaver (or grater), slice ½ cup of Parmesan cheese, set aside.

Take out the kale mixture, mix.

Add tomatoes, grated Parmesan, mix salad.

      Why Choose Skilled Home Health?

Home Health Care Cost Up To 52% Less Than A Hospital  Even a few hours’ stay in a hospital can cost a person thousands of dollars. When you extend that hospital stay to a matter of days and weeks, it can seem impossible to recover financially from the medical bills that will start pouring in. Patients can save substantial money with in-home care while receiving high-quality medical care. Remember that rates between home healthcare companies will vary, but studies have shown that home healthcare is usually the more economical option for patients and their families.

Hospice Can Improve Your Quality of Life

When chronic pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, anxiety, insomnia, or depression make it harder to get through the day for those with a terminal diagnosis, Nayar Hospice can help. Hospice is designed to reduce suffering and improve quality of life, but it can take time to get symptoms under control. Continuous visits from a hospice nurse over weeks or months can bring comfort and relief. This care can also reduce preventable trips to the emergency room or hospitalizations.

Goats Bring Holiday Cheer to Nayar Hospice Patient

Nayar Hospice Regional Clinical Manager, Culley Burleson’s sister, passed from Hepatosplenic T-Cell Lymphoma a few years ago. This aggressive lymphoma primarily affects young adults. However, her legacy continues to spread joy!

She dreamed of having a working farm where she and her husband, Eric Evans, could host events. After Culley’s sister passed, Eric continued to work towards their shared dream. He purchased a farm in Hanover County called Pactamere. The farm hosts events with their star livestock, the goats; Goat yoga, painting with goats, brunch & bubbly with goats, and more!

This year Eric donated a “goat gram” for NHC hospice patient, Ms. Ford.

SHE LOVED IT! Ms. Ford enjoyed it so much that she talked to Culley about how her daughter could get some goats and put them in the backyard for her to play with! Culley said of the day, “It was AMAZING to see my sister’s dream come true!”

      Fall Safety & Prevention

Most falls for older adults are due to a combination of underlying risk factors or health problems. Many falls cause only minor injuries, but they are scary and can cause some people to restrict their activities. Knowing the right exercises can help with gaining your strength and confidence back. Let’s work together to PREVENT patient falls. The best way to fight injuries is to prevent them from ever happening in the first place. So here are some tips to avoid those nasty slips and falls.

      • Wear appropriate footwear.
      • Keep your hands free!
      • Take smaller, shorter steps when walking for stability.
      • Use handrails if available.
      • Step down, not out, from your vehicle.
      • Plan ahead. Give yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going.
      • Watch for slippery floors inside.

      NayarNews December 2022 Issue

      A Season for Giving

Each year before Thanksgiving, Nayar Health Care gives its valued employees and partners their choice of a Ham or Turkey to thank them for their exemplary work and efforts over the past year.

Coping with Grief During the Holidays

The holidays can be difficult for those dealing with an illness, grief, or losing a loved one. Often the season can be marked by sadness, pain, anger, or dread. It can be challenging to cope, especially when you see the sights and sounds of holiday happiness around you. Permit yourself to feel whatever you feel. Try not to put on an emotional mask doing things to make the holiday “normal.” If you feel sad, allow the tears to come; if you feel angry, allow yourself to vent some steam. During the holiday season, you do not have to pretend to be strong and independent when grieving.
Accept the help and support of others to get through, so don’t feel isolated. If you need someone to help you prepare meals, shop, or decorate, this is the time to speak up and make your needs known. You might even be surprised by how delighted they are to help you.
You can also reach out to others going through a similar loss, finding connection and genuine sympathy. Look for a local Grief Share group in your area. Knowing you are not the only one dealing with grief can help you navigate this emotional time.

Home Health Care is not just a job to our team; it is a calling to care for those we have been given the opportunity to help!

“NHC has been amazing in providing top-notch wound care for my mom. The stress of the wound has had a profound impact on our family, but NHC has been so great in answering all of our questions and providing 1st class care and compassion. Crystal is amazing- you can tell she truly cares about people, and I look forward to getting to know her as we continue on this journey of healing for my mom. I’m so glad we found NHC and would recommend them to anyone who needs their services.” —A. Wigfall

      Decorate a Gingerbread House

Decorating gingerbread houses can be great for the motor skills of the elderly in your family. It also can be a great bonding activity for the entire family! The activity does not take up too much energy, making it a perfect holiday activity for seniors. It is also relaxing and serves as a medium for your loved ones to unleash their creative side.

      Holiday Roasted Vegetables

      Ingredients:
3/4 lb. Brussels sprouts, trim & half
2 Large carrots, peeled & sliced to 1/2”
      2 tbsp. Extra-virgin olive oil
      1 tbsp. Balsamic vinegar

      Kosher salt
      Freshly ground black pepper
      1/2 c. Toasted pecans
      1/2 c. Dried cranberries
      DIRECTIONS:
Step 1: Preheat oven to 400°. Scatter vegetables on a large baking sheet. Toss with oil, balsamic vinegar, rosemary,
& thyme—season with salt and pepper.
Step 2: Bake for 20 to 25 min. until the vegetables are tender, shaking the pan halfway through.

Nayar Health Care Newsletter: November 2022

Nayar Health Care Newsletter: November 2022

      National Hospice Awareness Month

      It’s a calling!

Culley Burleson knew in high school that she wanted to work in Hospice. During that time in Culley’s life, her grandpa Bill came to live with their family after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. Culley watched as Bill would spruce himself up and put on his best shirt to be ready for his hospice nurse to visit. Not only did the nurse take care of his medical needs, but she also provided a jovial banter and witty conversation that would brighten grandpa Bill’s day.

Years later, Culley is now NHC’s Hospice Clinical Manager. She recently took Carli, a new hospice nurse, around to meet the patients she will care for. One of the most memorable introductions was Ms. Askew. This lady has been with Nayar Health Care and Hospice for years. Ms. Askew was one of the first referrals NHC received into home health, and she was eventually referred to Hospice due to her declining cognitive ability. Culley recounted the visit for us:

“Carli and I walk in. I remind Ms. Askew who I am, introduce Carli, and go straight into the kitchen to wash her dishes and tidy up so Carli could assess her without me hovering. The whole time Ms. Askew acted like she didn’t want us there, complete with a few curse words and very raw comments. Once they finished, I talked Ms. Askew into going out onto her porch to enjoy the beautiful weather. I asked if I could brush her hair, and she let me. We exchanged good-natured insults and matched whits while she shot Carlie a knowing grin. The next day Ms. Askew’s granddaughter sent me this text: “Good Morning! I just thought I’d tell you what my grandma told me last night. ‘I just love that woman who came here today. She’s a good friend of mine.’” I laughed out loud when I read it—THIS! THIS RIGHT HERE is EXACTLY why I became a hospice nurse!

I see my grandpa in every patient I care for. I remember the feeling I had when seeing him so happy when his hospice nurse would come. So I chose this career. It’s a calling. Yes, this work is hard. I have cried so much. However, deep in my heart, I know I am doing okay at this hospice thing! If I can bring even a fraction of the joy that nurse brought to my grandpa Bill, it is all worth it. Ms. Askew is someone’s mom, grandma, sister, and friend, just like my grandpa Bill. She deserves to be treated like she is valued and loved. I get to see little glimpses of who she was before her disease, and I will take the opportunity every chance I get to continue to see those glimpses before she passes.

It’s a beautiful way to keep your loved ones’ memories alive from generation to generation.

      Butternut Squash Soup

      Ingredients:

      • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
      • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
      • ½ teaspoon sea salt
      • 1 (3-pound) butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cubed
      • 3 garlic cloves, chopped
      • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage
      • ½ tablespoon minced fresh rosemary
      • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
      • 3 to 4 cups vegetable broth
      • Freshly ground black pepper

Directions: Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, salt, and several grinds of fresh pepper and sauté until soft, 5 to 8 minutes. Add the squash and cook until it begins to soften, occasionally stirring, for 8 to 10 minutes.

Add the garlic, sage, rosemary, and ginger. Stir and cook 30 seconds to 1 minute, until fragrant, then add 3 cups of the broth. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook until the squash is tender, 20 to 30 minutes.

Let cool slightly and pour the soup into a blender, working in batches if necessary, and blend until smooth. If your soup is too thick, add up to 1 cup more broth and blend. Season to taste and serve with parsley, pepitas, and crusty bread.

      National Physical Therapy Month

Let’s come together and raise awareness of physical therapy as a safe, effective alternative route to medication such as opioids to treat chronic pain conditions. It’s also a time to celebrate the outstanding work done by health professionals to restore and maintain function and improve people’s lives without using potentially harmful and addictive medication. At Nayar Health Care, we think of Physical Therapy as “the safer way to manage pain.”

      Keep Memory Sharp

Memory games are a fun method of exercising your mind to improve your memory. Like our bodies, the brain needs regular use to stay healthy and sharp. Memory games challenge the mind and help the gray matter in our brains—the part that impacts memory—grow and expand. Research has shown that just 15 minutes each day of brain training can improve brain function. So give Sudoku, crossword puzzles, or a card game to flex that mind!

“I want to personally thank You & the clinical staff including Hospice for the wonderful care you all provide to our patients. I have had multiple patient’s & family members call me to say what a wonderful job you all provide to our community.”

Spotlight: Kendra Coleman, Home Health Aide Hospice

Kendra came to Nayar Hospice Care after teaching Head Start in her local school district. She had experienced her own losses, making hospice something she felt called to do. Kendra is loved by all of her patients and their family members. She consistently goes above and beyond to make her patients feel loved and cherished. Her kindness and warmth are unmatched. The care she provides to hospice patients is compassionate and loving, and she has an extraordinary way with her patients. She is a blessing to everyone she meets, cares for, and is always willing to go the extra mile.

      Patient-Driven Care

When patients begin care with Nayar Health Care’s Hospice Division, our primary focus is their care and comfort. Everything our team does is patient-driven. Together with the patient’s loved ones and family members, patients are made comfortable and peaceful for the rest of their life. Nayar Hospice Care supports the patient’s emotional, social, and spiritual needs and medical conditions as part of treating the whole person. Our Hospice team includes Chaplain, Social Workers, RNs, and LPNs. All of which organize and work together for the patient’s benefit.

      To Our Patient’s Families

Our medical specialists care about you & your family’s health. At Nayar Health Care, we understand what it is like to feel stressed about your loved ones and their care. We realize that you have many demands on your time and need to know the quality of care provided to your loved one at any given time. We want you to maximize the quality of time you spend talking to your loved one. Those precious conversations should be about the beautiful things in life, not what their health care provider did last week. Nayar Health Care built a portal system for families to make this happen. First, we get approval from your loved one to log in. You will be able to see the notes of the person who visited your loved one — their title and a description of their clinical assessment and medication reassessment. You can log on to this anytime from anywhere you have internet. You will also have an option to leave a message for the clinician to call you if you have any questions.

      Money Talks

While many companies are slashing budgets as a result of rising expenses, Nayar Health Care just gave their employees a raise.

ak nayar and management team for salary increases
[Henrico, Virginia]: In light of current events and the economic climate of our country, it has not been sitting well with A K Nayar, president & CEO of Nayar Health Care, that everyone is going through hardships to no fault of their own. Inflation has caused an undue burden on all of us. Nayar stated, “It saddens me when I hear stories of how my employees are altering their lives to make due. Things are becoming so expensive; I recently heard one of my employees say, ‘we used to go out for dinner once a week, but with everything getting so expensive, now we go out only once a month.’ Or the story from another employee saying, ‘my boy wants to play travel baseball, but we can’t this year because travel expenses, from gas to lodging, have gotten way too high.’ Trying to get back to normal after dealing with COVID for over two years, then coping with astronomical prices for our everyday essentials, gives us very little hope of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Nayar went on to reflect on the Nayar Health Care staff. “I genuinely believe in what we do and our staff! They have all worked hard over the past years, and while corporate America is focused on their profit, I believe that the employees make our company great. It is evident by what our staff has accomplished.”

Nayar Health Care has decided to take care of its employees above corporate profit shares. The leadership team at NHC intends to set an example and precedent among the health care industry in Virginia—to take care of the people first. Corporate philosophy has to depart from the adage that the rich keep getting richer and needs to embrace, do unto others, as you would have done to yourself. Fiscal responsibility has got to balance with employee wellbeing. On June 7th Nayar Health Care announced that all employees, excluding management, will be receiving a 5% increase in pay effective 6/13/2022. The company hopes this will provide relief from the strain of inflation.

A K Nayar says of this ‘I now challenge other health care companies to match me – better yet, try and out due me with your next salary increase. We can do better as an industry. CEOs and CFOs are reading this that have the power to make positive change in our community — let’s shift where the dollars go so they land back on the tables of restaurants in our community or so the families can invest in their children’s passions. Money talks; let’s make sure it says something we want to hear!”

      Legacy of a Lifetime

      [Henrico, Virginia]:
January 2021 has brought with it many new beginnings, and at Nayar Health Care and Nayar Hospice, we are pleased to be seeing our New Year’s resolutions coming in to focus. We are now fully operational with a very unique project for our hospice families. Nayar Hospice is celebrating lives lived and legacies created with the “Legacy of a Lifetime” project.

This compassionate project began in 2020 when A K Nayar, President & CEO of Nayar Health Care and Nayar Hospice, along with Margarete Jeffers, a Social Worker at Nayar Hospice, shared a dream of creating a book for every hospice patient. They both saw the need for their patient’s legacy to live on and be known by their families. Now in 2021 ‘The Legacy of a Lifetime’ project has been born. This is a custom memoir book, specially written and curated by the team at Nayar Hospice. “It is a blessing for the next generation,” recounts Margarete Jeffers.

Though it is a delicate situation when a patient enters hospice, Nayar Hospice approaches every story with care, and the team writes about the person to honor their individual account. A K Nayar said the goal is to “…recognize the lives people have lived and the memories they have from throughout a lifetime”.

The process begins with an interview of the patient. It helps them to reflect and remember. The legacy book is about preserving memories and stories so that we may stand on our ancestors’ shoulders, knowing our roots and how a family’s loved one grew to be the people they were.
Every new Nayar Hospice patient gets a Legacy Book. Every book is different and beautifully unique to the individual. The Legacy Book details their life journey from birthplace and childhood to marriages, careers, interests, and what they want their families to remember most. Much research goes into these stories to ensure that the story is accurate and captures their story. In its completion, the final Legacy Book captures their personality and lives. It is custom made to be of the highest quality with ostrich leather covers from Canada. “We want it to be honest and as respectful as possible.” said A K Nayar, “It is an honor for us to give to the family.”

There are caregivers, and then there are life-givers.

      [Henrico, Virginia]:
Kelly, Hospice Case Manager for Nayar Hospice, is a real example of someone who looks not only to heal but to help! She sets the standard that in-home hospice care encompasses the physical well-being of the patient and their living environment.

When Kelly was first assigned to a new hospice patient in King and Queen County, she expected to help a man transition from a nursing home to living at home. The patient, who needs a wheelchair, was returning to a mobile home with missing floor tiles, holes in the wall, and worst of all – no running water. He would be living there with his son now, his primary caregiver. However, the son also has limited mobility as a result of a traumatic brain injury. The pair were collecting rainwater and using a hot plate to heat it.

Kelly has been caring for hospice patients for the past seven years of her twenty-year career. She has seen many living conditions that are less than desirable, but this one was one of the worst. Kelly felt compelled to do something! She started by setting up a personal Facebook donation page, asking friends and family to contribute. She raised enough money to start buying supplies to help the family!

The mobile home had no furniture. The son would load his father into the car and drive around just so they could sit comfortably for a little while each day. With the money raised, Kelly was able to get supplies to make some upgrades to the home. Through generous donations from complete strangers, the family was able to have a new sofa and recliner. Employees of Nayar Health Care took of their time to pick up the furniture and deliver to the home. Kelly was able to install new flooring, paint walls, and even found a generous plumber to donate his time to get the family running water!

Now the family can relax in their home. “They have a phenomenal aid, Janice, there helping them with their needs,” Kelly said. Kelly is still donating her own time to help this father and son. She does their laundry and even spent an entire day cleaning the refrigerator to make sure it was suitable for healthy meals. Kelly has also has found kitchen cabinets and countertops to put in and is looking for help to get that done!

Kelly tells us, “Sometimes you come across living conditions that are not ideal. But these gentlemen were willing to accept the help. They needed help. I felt drawn to this family and feel like I’ve adopted them!”

The best-case scenario would be that this father and son could have a new trailer. For now, they’re doing the best they can. The aids and caregivers of Nayar Health Care and Nayar Hospice have donated household supplies, clothing, and, most importantly—time.

It’s amazing where you’ll find a need. The difference here is that someone saw a need and didn’t wait for somebody else to fix it. Kelly and the other hospice staff took action and made positive change happen! Through the generosity of many people, this father and son live a more comfortable life where they can focus on health and recovery together.

Local Church’s Gift to Nayar Health Care Supports COVID-19 Response Efforts

[Henrico, Virginia]Nayar Health Care was the recipient of a generous donation from Presbytery of the James, a Presbyterian Church in Richmond, VA. The organization gave a welcome financial gift to help NHC with the purchasing of supplies for treating our patients, specifically those with COVID-19. These funds will be used for PPE equipment including N95 masks, and Nayar Hospice Library books to aid with grief and counseling.

A special thank you to Gina Maio, an ordained Presbyterian minister and Chaplin at Nayar Hospice, as well as Fred Holbrook, for facilitating this goodwill.

Our team is very grateful for the generosity of Presbytery of the James. We will “pay it forward” — through compassionate care to our patients and their families!

Local Business Owner Donates His Salary to Boost Up His Employees

Vowing Not To Lay Anyone Off In 2020

[Henrico, Virginia]: The world is a different place than it was two weeks ago when A K Nayar, president & CEO of Nayar Health Care, boarded a plane for India. Traveling abroad to visit his aging parents, Nayar could not have speculated the unrest and social uncertainty that would await his return to the states—arriving Saturday at Dulles International Airport in DC, Nayar emerged from customs without a temperature. Still, his resolve to take care of his employees at a fever-pitch. While on the trip, he gained a worldly perspective on the pandemic we are all dealing with locally. Nayar now sees this as an opportunity to give back, support his employees, set an example for other business owners, and make a real difference.

The CEO is making three significant corporate policy changes, effective immediately.

One, regardless of their tenure or status (Part-time or Full-Time) Nayar will be donating a portion of his annual salary to give each of his employees $500 extra in their next paycheck. He hopes that this will allow them to stock up on groceries, pay for extra child care, or fulfill other necessities.

Two, for the rest of 2020, Nayar Health Care will not layoff any of its employees. Nayar does not want his employees to worry about the status of their position as the world adjusts to this “new normal.” He wants them to be able to focus on the care of their patients and have their minds in the right place to offer comfort and support to the community.

And third, Nayar will be suspending the 90-day policy to be able to use PTO. Effective immediately, all employees of Nayar Health Care will be able to take the time they need to care for their families and loved ones. Families come first.

A K Nayar stated, “2020 has landed Home Health agencies around the country with a tremendous financial setback, and almost every home health agency has seen a significant reduction in reimbursement in the first quarter. This, coupled with the pandemic of COVID-19, is going to cause unrest in the community regardless of the industry. It is time for us to unite as a force to fight this, keep our loved ones safe, and not let profits be at the forefront of our businesses. As a locally owned organization, we want our employees and our patients that we take care of day in and day out, to know we will do everything in our power to ensure their safety and welfare in such difficult times. I urge everyone to stay safe and not take this pandemic lightly so we can come out of it stronger than ever before. “
